Experience a unique expedition into an area that sees little visitor numbers in the North East of Madagascar. This trip combines trekking and camping in forests and rice paddies and the chance to raft down a remote river that heads towards the coast. You can choose to extend your trip and spend time in the undiscovered Indian Ocean resort of Mahambo, a place to relax on stunning beaches or take to the sea in this uncrowded surf spot.

There is no other place like Madagascar, it really is a remarkable place. Its animals, plants and landscapes are incredible and the people of Madagascar are like no other that you will meet. Located near the equator and various habitats, ranging from mangrove swamps to mountain tops and deserts to rainforests, it really is one of the most pivotal countries for biodiversity. The Madagascan climate has meant that the variety and richness of life has flourished beyond belief.

Expedition members do not need previous rafting experience as full training will be given. There are a few days trekking over undulating terrain so a moderate level of fitness is required.

Day 1: Tongasoa eto Antananarivo!

Day 2: Heading to Andasibe National Park to experience our first encounter with lemurs!

Once done with breakfast, and introductory briefing from the tour leader, we will start our journey to Andasibe National Park. Whilst en-route we will make a stop at a farm that specialises in Madagascan reptiles and butterflies, before arriving at our lodge.

In the afternoon you will get the opportunity to take a stroll around the private reserve – lemur island with the chance to get up close to the lemurs, well known to jump up on your shoulder to gain a closer look.

Day 3: Discovering Analamazaotra Park & Trekking in Mantadia National Park

After visiting Analamazaotra Park, we will drive along a scenic road to Andasifahadimy (Around half an hour drive).

The Analamazaotra Park, within the Andasibe/Mantadia National Park is renowned for its rare orchids that bloom in the forest ad home to the largest lemur species in Madagascar – the Indri, which can luckily be observed all year round here. It is a park that has over 108 species of birds and houses pristine waterfalls. You may also be able to spot 14 other species of lemurs here (including the rarest and almost impossible to find).

This is where the adventure really starts, setting out towards Lohariandava and reaching the rainforest after a 1 mile of trekking. Today we will hike for around 3 – 4 hrs, crossing the Sahatandra river – the pace at which we walk is not too fast and the hiking path is good. Tonight we will set up camp next to a small village.

Day 4: Trekking in the forest

Following on from breakfast, we will pack up camp and head off for the next part of the adventure. Our morning will consist of walking through the forest, the path is decent but does feature some hills. On our way out of the first section of forest we should have a magnificent view of the surrounding area. In the afternoon we will set up camp near the Satronima River.

Day 5: Trekking into the depths of the forest

Today is spent mostly under the forest canopy and the path we are following will become more complicated with branches and muddy passes. Tonight we camp at the end of the forest.

Day 6: Exchanging forest for river, with a trek from Andekaleka to Lohariandava

Today we will embark on a steep half hour climb before leaving the forest behind. From here you will be able to notice the forest disappearing due to deforestation and the locals farming methods. The locals are often very friendly and welcoming towards us. We cross the Sahatandra/Vohitra River again and head to Andekaleka train station, this is where we will catch the train to the next stop on our adventure. Our rafts and river gear will be waiting for us at Lohariandava, we will talk through some basic safety and training checks before enjoying a relaxing evening at our riverside camp.

Day 7 – 9: Chapter 2 – Rafting down the Sahatandra River

After breakfast, we will be setting off on the next part of our adventure – the rafting descent of the Sahatandra River. The Sahatandra River winds its way through dense rainforest, bamboo groves and weaves through narrow passages. Sometimes, you are able to spot bamboo lemurs on the shore and on the river, active birdlife. This rafting river is great for providing us with a range of Grade II/III/IV rapids, on which you will be able to practice key skills on the first, more gentle rapids.

As the river starts to descend and we gain confidence in our rafting skills, we will begin to navigate the numerous stretches of white water. Once night falls we will pitch our tents on the riverside and enjoy good food, good company, campfires and the stunningly beautiful Madagascan skies.

Day 10: A final paddle + back to Antananarivo

This morning we set off to paddle the final section of our Sahatandra descent. Once arriving in Anivorano, we transfer by road to Antananarivo. However, for those who have opted for the popular East Coast Adventure beach extension, to Mahambo!

Day 11: End of Trip

Your day will be spent at leisure before your transfer to the airport in time for your flight home. Optional Extension.

BEACH EXTENSION:

The added bonus of a beach extension is the best way to unwind after an action-packed trekking and rafting adventure. A trip to Mahambo, the Eastern Madagascan hidden gem, can provide a great deal of relaxation looking out onto the blue seas of the Indian Ocean. For those of you who are more adventurous and want to keep going, there are plenty of sea activities such as sea kayaking and surfing. Increasingly popular with surfers, this destination is the ideal place to visit if you fancy giving it a go.
