  • Enjoy a truly off the beaten track dhow/ pirogue safari – Island hopping around the Nosy Be archipelago.

Day 1: Tongasoa eto Antananarivo!

Once you have arrived in Antananarivo (or Tana, as it is known by the locals), you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel.

Antananarivo is both the largest city in Madagascar and the capital. It is always buzzing with activity and flooded with people, selling everything that you could imagine! Tana resembles a Mediterranean hill town so exploring the architectural sites and rich culture on foot is somewhat easy (as long as you are willing to climb hundreds of ancient stone steps). It can be quite hectic so we do recommend a driver/guide if you decide to explore this city.

Day 2: Flight to Diego before visiting the  dry forest of Montagne Des Français

This morning you be transferred to the airport for your flight to Antsiranana (Diego Suarez). Once arriving in Diego, you will be greeted by your guide and driver who will stay with you for the week and you will head towards Montagne des Français, a short 1 ½ hour by road however a very different surrounding.

This afternoon we will have a trek in this area to discover some of the inhabitants.

This evening we will experience a unique night in a tree bungalow – literally huts that are built amongst the trees!

Day 3: Montagne Des Francais – Jofreville

Spend the morning at leisure. There are various activities you can choose to take part in, from climbing, to mountain boarding, an adventure course, slack lining or just another trek. Feel free to discuss your preferences with your guide (some of the activities are charged for additionally). In the afternoon we will head to Jofreville (and the Montagne d’Ambre – the Amber Mountain).

Day 4: Amber Mountain

Today we will set out on a trek to explore the Amber Mountain

This beautiful National Park encompasses a large tropical forest with volcanic lakes and waterfalls. This idyllic spot of forest is a breath of fresh air that allows you to escape the stuffy heat of this region. There are various animals that inhabit Amber Mountain, including the fossa, ring-tailed mongoose and 8 lemurs (these can be difficult to spot). There are also 75 bird species that call it home – 35 of them are endemic, 60 reptiles (35 frogs, 40 butterflies, leaf-tailed gecko’s and a number of different chameleon species). Due to the park being in close proximity to Diego, it can get quite busy in the high season, but this shouldn’t deter you from visiting!

Day 5:  Ankarana

This morning we will head to our first destination, Ankarana.  This afternoon we will visit Perte de Riviere – this is a gateway to a series of caves that lead to the ocean.

Day 6: Exploring and unearthing the striking landscapes of Ankarana Reserve

Today we will spend time exploring this amazing park. The trails are not the easiest but they are feasible for anyone who has a moderate level of fitness. We do recommend to visit this park in the dry season (May – Nov).

Hopefully you will get a chance to cool off in the lodge swimming pool to round off a hard days trek.

Day 7: Hit the road towards the Ankify

Today we start our morning by heading to Ambanja and then onwards to Ankify. Following on from lunch in Ambanja, we will explore on our mountain bikes the area and the Cacao plantation. Once we have finished the cycle, we head to the coast of Ankify (approx. 20 minutes). Tonight we will be staying in the beach bungalows.

Day 8: Ankify

Today we will either explore the Sambarino River or the coastal mangroves by kayak, which one we decide on will depend on the depth of the river. Spend your afternoon at leisure and once again we will be staying at the beach bungalows.

Day 9: Ankify – Nosy-Be

You will separate from your driver and guide this morning as you will be taking a private boat to Nosy Be. Upon arrival a taxi will transfer you to your hotel. This afternoon can be spent relaxing at your beautiful hotel on the beach. At a pre-determined time, you will take a walk along the beach, where you will be introduced to your team who will accompany you on your dhow/pirogue safari tomorrow. There will be a debrief before returning to your hotel for dinner.

Day 10: Nosy-Be/Anjiabe

Bright and early this morning you will meet the Alefa Office for breakfast before boarding your Dhow/Pirogue (this depends on the number in the group) to explore stunning areas where the sea is the only path.  Snorkeling, swimming and plenty of discoveries await us.

Please note the actual itinerary for the next 3 days will be decided by the team following your meeting, but will be something like the following:

After our journey on the dhow, we will land at Anjiabé, a beach that stretches 3km aand is bordered by a semi-abandoned coconut plantation. This is where we will be camping tonight. Once we have had a drink and a gorgeous meal of seafood that our chef prepared for us, we will have the opportunity to nap, swim and for those who desire to, walk on a trail that will allow you to watch birds that are mostly endemic to Madagascar.

Sunset, cocktails, meals … And good night!

Nights will be spent wild camping on beaches

Day 11: Snorkeling and Nature Walks

Tide dependent we will depart relatively early to the island’s northernmost archipelago, Radama (approx. 2 ½hr crossing). We will get a chance to swim along the way. Nosy Ambariopôtaka rises to 166 meters and provides a different landscape to what we experienced previously; we camp facing the Mozambique Channel. As we make our way to the next bay, we often find a Sakalava carpenter at work – with a shell or two of dhows rested on beds of pink and white periwinkles. A lagoon surrounds the hole island. Jungle based nature walks and relaxing the order of today.

Day 12: Island hopping – Nosy-Be

This morning is spent exploring by boat and snorkeling. After lunch we head back to Nosy Be where you will be staying once again and the stunning beach hotel. Afternoon at leisure.

Day 13: Back to Antananarivo or optional extension (e.g. Nosy-Be or Island hopping)

A transfer will take you to the airport where an Air Madagascar flight will take you from Nosy Be to Tana. Dependent on the time we arrive in Tana, you will get the chance to visit the handicraft market, before being transferred to your hotel.

Day 14: End of Trip

Transfer to airport in time for flight home. If you happen to be on the Air France or Air Kenya trip which leaves in the early morning of day 14, you can opt to have a day use room &/or driver/guide for the day (not included).
