The crew arrived into Southampton to join the newly refitted Starling with a promising sense of enthusiasm and fun. After the normal safety briefs for living below decks and the same above, we enjoyed a hearty lunch before setting off for the shakedown sail to Cowes. It was quiet on the Solent, understandably, as we […]
We’ve had several days of passage crossing the North Sea in our two watch teams. For some of the crew we’ve now had our first experience of sailing in Force 8 storms! It’s been a mixed bag of weather; we weren’t really expecting it to be a smooth ride, but we’re certainly getting through a […]
Hummingbird blog Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose….. After a brief fogbound sojourn, Hummingbird left Stavanger under blue skies and bright sunshine. A quick fuelling stop and then it was (fairly) straight out into the North Sea under Andy’s meticulous pilotage. A last fond look at the Norwegian coastline as we set a […]
Departed Kirkwall for superb sail to Scotland, navigation by Clare. Saw the first cetacean action of the trip (just a couple of dolphins) and reached idyllic anchorage in Loch Eriboll, which we left this morning for a very civilised rounding of Cape Wrath with moderate following wind and some sunshine. Tied up at Kinlochbervie […]
The forecast was for rain showers all day so in preparation for a dreich day we had a large pan of porridge for breakfast. Fortunately the forecast was wrong and we had a lovely sail down the coast around Point of Stoer and among little skerries to Loch Salainn in Enard bay, escorted (briefly) by […]
22.09.2019 Lerwick to Stronsay today. 103nm. The sea was grey and the sky was grey, but the crew were not. Good sailing in a F5/6 blowing mainly in the right direction. Lionel rustled up a great risotto, and supper was excellent too, washed down with G and T and red wine. We will sleep well […]
21.09.19 We started the day with a lesson in celestial navigation. I now have huge admiration for any sailor relying on a sextant! The rest of the day was free so several of us (Rod, Bill, Robert, Nick and Alison) caught the bus (55 stops) down to the Jarlshof (Prehistoric and Norse remains near Sumburgh). […]
Oriole: 20th September After an exciting passage across the North Sea, the crew was delighted to make land at Out Skerries. A late afternoon walk revealed a shop, a shop’s cat, some great views of the islands, a kirk with an organ (ably played by Allson), and mobile reception. No pub on the island, but […]
Cracking morning after strong gust at 5.30am woke us all. Bright but very cold (snow on the hills). Got out the staysail and practised lots of tacks with two headsails. Getting to grips with the running backstays. Arrived Fedje just after 2pm before the forecasted gale arrived. Afternoon was spent exploring local carpet bog and […]
Left Fedje in fine weather and motor-sailed down to south end of island to start passage to Shetlands (170 miles, passage planners Rod, Alison and Robert). A mixed passage with something for everybody. Exhilarating sailing, but choppy seas which pretty much exhausted the boat’s supply of seasickness bags (easy to laugh at when you don’t […]
Tuesday 17th We woke early to Robert’s hearty porridge, which set us up for our first day’s sailing. Some dashed ashore for showers and we all prepared for departure. We hanked on the No3 Yankee and Staysail and prepared lines for departure. Hummingbird left the pontoon perfectly, helmed by skipper Mike. Of course this is […]
Started the day with morning ablutions. Rod had to go via the airport so he could sail away. Departure from Bergen was emotional… the pier packed with people waving and taking photos. Exhausting afternoon; reefs in, reefs out, shake it all about, accompanied by torrential downpours. Lovely anchorage… Something smells fishy? Jo
The smoking of any form of tobacco is forbidden on board or on the dock next to the boat. We also very strongly discourage the smoking of any tobacco at any time between the start and end date as the smell comes on-board into confined living space. The use of e-cigarettes is fine.
