{"id":8375,"date":"2025-04-17T11:18:17","date_gmt":"2025-04-17T10:18:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rubicon3adventure.com\/hummingbirds-atlantic-crossing-from-usa-to-scotland\/"},"modified":"2025-06-06T10:02:33","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T09:02:33","slug":"hummingbirds-atlantic-crossing-from-usa-to-scotland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rubicon3adventure.com\/fr\/hummingbirds-atlantic-crossing-from-usa-to-scotland\/","title":{"rendered":"Travers\u00e9e de l&#8217;Atlantique par un colibri, des \u00c9tats-Unis \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00c9cosse"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>May 10th<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>26 miles to the waypoint.<\/p>\n\n<p>7.1 knots boat speed.<\/p>\n\n<p>In three and a half hours (give or take depending on the ratio of helm focus to chatting and tea drinking) we&#8217;ll bear north, around the edge of Wexford and into the Irish Sea.<\/p>\n\n<p>Our new bearing will take us on the final spurt of our journey to Largs \u2013 only a couple of days later than anticipated. And with that, we&#8217;ll have left blue water sailing behind, having crossed an ocean. Like bankruptcy, or the eruption of an Azores volcano, the end of our journey will have come two ways: gradually and then suddenly.<\/p>\n\n<p>Crossing an ocean has meant different things to each of us on board: adventure, challenge, fun, learning new skills or applying lifetimes of experience to a singular goal. And we&#8217;ve had all of that in spades over the last month or so. We&#8217;ll all have our favourite moments when we look back on the trip. Admittedly, for many of us those moments will be more heavily weighted towards the early legs when the conditions were sometimes just right, occasionally a bit too much, but seldom not enough. Those legs fuelled themselves \u2013 the adrenaline hit of time spent sailing driving you from one watch into the next at pace.<\/p>\n\n<p>Since leaving the Azores though, we have at times resembled the painted ship upon the painted ocean. Motor on, the sails dropped down. In the absence of any albatross, the hellish crimes were more concerned with who had snuck a sneaky shower or finished the milk. The wind then developed a sense of humour, resolute in its determination to meet us head-on whichever way we pointed the ship. Motor purring, we were using more fuel than anticipated, necessitating a fuel stop before Largs.<\/p>\n\n<p>At times I think we&#8217;ve all slipped towards a completist mentality. We had all set ourselves a target that had roused quizzical eyebrows each time we told someone of our holiday plans. The mindset shifted towards getting the job done.<\/p>\n\n<p>But then, in piercing moments of clarity, the absurdity of that position becomes clear. Whether it&#8217;s steering the ship by the night sky and realising you recognise the tableau above you. Watching crewmates grow in confidence to take the lead as we make our sail changes. Feeling the gears of teamwork grind more efficiently when we get things right. Taking advantage of the flat seas to learn about celestial navigation or route planning. Taking instruction from the skipper or first mate and clocking that you don&#8217;t have as many questions as you did a couple of weeks ago. Applying the theory you learned a couple of days previously when you hear the vessel you&#8217;re monitoring is not under command. The laughter in the galley as we prepare the next meal. The conversations with new friends that take place in the quiet moments. The comfort with each other to sometimes let those quiet moments be quiet.<\/p>\n\n<p>I&#8217;m sure we&#8217;ll all weigh up what the journey means to us once we&#8217;ve gone our separate ways from Largs. But for now, we&#8217;ve got two more days to enjoy those moments.<\/p>\n\n<p>Today I helmed a ship as we closed in on the Irish coastline I spent my childhood summers on, giving a new perspective to land I know well. I sat with friends and watched dolphins dance alongside us, and seals pop their heads up to check us out. I exploded a bottle of pancake mix on the only clean trousers I have left and laughed about it. I finally got to enjoy ship&#8217;s puttanesca with the olives and the capers in place.<\/p>\n\n<p>Despite the impishness of the wind and the hum of the motor, it&#8217;s been a good day. Hopefully, once we reach our next waypoint and turn northwards, the final couple of days on board will unfold gradually.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>Revenge of the 6th! <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>For all those following our adventure, all onboard are safe and well. We just seem to have been stifled by the wind (or lack thereof&#8230; or direction thereof, or both thereof). Unfortunately, it&#8217;s slow going occasionally and sometimes frustrating for those on the helm to maintain course with such fickle winds.<\/p>\n\n<p>Of course, this sometimes also leads to random conversations and conjecture about lots of different things like the weather, or politics (usually avoided if possible), and the like. It can get rather random, and recently conversation focused on the Generator space, a place where Thorben and I disappear from time to time to do boat stuff. To those in the Rubicon 3 know, this area is affectionately known as &#8220;Narnia&#8221;, and this is because you have to enter through a door that is behind the wet locker where we hang all our foulies. Generally, it is only the Skipper and Mate who go in, as it is a machinery space\u2014health &amp; safety etc. etc. etc&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n<p>This has led to the suspicion amongst the crew that:<br\/>There is a lion in there;<br\/>We have a rum store in there;<br\/>We have a fully stocked bar with a barkeeper\/doorman called Ramon (who won\u2019t let you in if you\u2019re not on the list);<br\/>We have a hot tub, sauna, and resident masseuse;<\/p>\n\n<p>And lastly but not least; it is an existential portal that links to Bluejay&#8217;s and Starling&#8217;s Narnias and all the Skippers and Mates meet up and have noisy parties! I use them here mainly because yesterday was the 4th of May, and the aural juxtaposition seems to amuse people. The allusion is, however, apposite, in that for the last 24 hours, it seems that about the only thing that would get us moving faster than a slow walk on a Sunday afternoon would indeed be the intervention of the elusive Force used to such effect by Luke Skywalker in his struggles against the evil Empire.<\/p>\n\n<p>But, sadly, the only force we had available was the Perkins engine inserted into the belly of the Hummingbird. However, this was not always so. Having achieved the considerable feat of crossing an ocean, we arrived in the port of Horta in the Azores, with the intention there to briefly re-provision and be on our way on the final leg of our passage to Largs, in that fabled land of porridge where Haggis roam free in the hills of their birth before joining neeps and tatties, as is their ancestral fate. However, the vicissitudes of Mother Nature meant that plans to leave after one night were dashed. We had an inkling that this might be the case when we relaxed in &#8216;Pete&#8217;s Bar&#8217;, an iconic hostelry on the edge of the port, frequented for over a hundred years by sailors passing through, as evidenced by the plethora of sailing memorabilia attached to the walls, some from notable sailing royalty such as Eric Tabarly and Tracey Edwards. When speaking to other yacht crews, mentioning that we were leaving on the morrow, they responded with incredulity, showing us images of terrifying winds forecast on their wind apps. Thus it was that we were unsurprised when our skipper, the fearless Thorben, informed us that we would be waiting until the front moved through \u2013 I for one was fine with that. If it was too blowy for Thorben, it was far too windy for me!<\/p>\n\n<p>In the event, we waited in Horta for three nights, allowing us to find out that although quaint and smart, with welcoming people, the island had limited tourist facilities, particularly when it was windy and raining. The indefatigable Marcus, with true Swiss resolve, hired a minibus and a few of us went on a trip across the island, only to find that it was closed on Tuesdays, apart from the volcano visitor centre on the site of an eruption in 1957 that extended Portugal&#8217;s empire by about two miles. We also learned that we were in fact standing at the most westerly point on the European tectonic plate; therefore, we were at the most westerly point of Europe, geologically if not politically, since there are more westerly islands in the Azores archipelago, seized during Portugal&#8217;s colonialist surge, but they are on the North American plate \u2013 funny the things you find interesting when it&#8217;s raining!<\/p>\n\n<p>Anyway, given that the Azores are closed on a Tuesday, we found ourselves back at Pete&#8217;s Bar, meeting again with our comrades from the night before who were relieved that we were still on dry land. Whilst many of us rearranged hotels and flights (given that our delay on the Azores meant that our arrival in Largs was likely to be delayed), others sampled the fine &#8216;Gin Do Mar&#8217; produced by Pete.<\/p>\n\n<p>A useful aphorism in life I find is the saying by Thomas Aquinas (though don&#8217;t quote me on that because I don&#8217;t have access to Google) &#8216;&#8230;this too will pass&#8217;. So the worst of the storm front passed and we prepared to leave Horta. We were still expecting high winds up to 35\u201340 kts, which was serious stuff, so the storm tri-sail and storm jib were rigged, and we sailed out of Horta with rather fetching orange sails, which I thought looked lovely in the morning light. Before long, we were relieved that we had gone to the effort of putting up those pretty sails, as we embarked upon a high-octane white-knuckle sleigh ride, holding on to the wheel as Hummingbird surged on, solid and reliable, if noisy when she hit walls of water some over 5 metres high. Great fun, if a little hair-raising, and not a little frustrating when trying to dress on a floor at an almost vertical angle.<\/p>\n\n<p>But soon, this too passed. The winds have dropped, and what winds there are, are in the wrong direction\u2014from the north, which is where we want to go. And anyone who knows anything about this sailing malarkey knows that doesn&#8217;t work. So, as I write, with the First Mate, Alex, desperately trying to kick me out of the chart room so that he and Thorben can do some navigation nonsense or something, we are motor sailing in the general direction of Ireland, hoping for a wind shift so that we can get sailing properly again. Maybe we should be using the Force\u2014May the 4th be with us, given that most of us have no idea what day it is anyway!<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>SW<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>May 3rd<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>A BRAW BRIGHT MOONLIGHT NIGHT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>I joined <em>Hummingbird<\/em> and her motley crew midway through her Atlantic Transit from Key West to Largs, Scotland.<\/p>\n\n<p>Although I regularly check up on the R3 &#8211; FB page, the offer of this passage popped up at a fortuitous time for me.<\/p>\n\n<p>Upon flying to Horta, on the island of Faial in the Azores, I was introduced to the existing crew, Skip &amp; Mate.<\/p>\n\n<p>With a few Andys, a couple of Erics, a few Swiss, a Swede, an American, a Canadian, an Englishman and an Irishman living in Wales, it was all a bit overwhelming for me, who is at the best of times hopeless with remembering names, especially after 24 hrs of non-stop sleepless travel!<\/p>\n\n<p>With some pretty fierce winds just north of the Azores, the weather gods gave me some grace, with an extra day or two in port to get familiar with my crewmates. A wee adventure to the volcano and a few meals out helped integrate me to the crew before setting off.<\/p>\n\n<p>Some of the Q&#8217;s asked of me were &#8211; Why (part of) this leg, why another ocean passage, and why back towards home in Bonnie Scotland?<\/p>\n\n<p>Well, there are a number of reasons:<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><ul><li class=\"\">Seize the day!<br>I had very sadly said &#8220;Fair Winds&#8221; to a great friend, neighbour and fellow sailor just the week before. She was taken from family, friends and colleagues, all too soon, and way too young.<br>So I am partly doing this in memory of Lydia &#8211; May she rest in peace &#8211; and also because of the stark reminder &#8211; that life is short &#8211; don&#8217;t dither &#8211; get on with it!<\/li><\/ul><ul><li class=\"\">Life is for Living.<br>I work to live &#8211; not live to work! Winter in the Northern Hemisphere can be tough &#8211; the desire to escape from that work routine, winter, and envelope myself in nature again was strong. Breaking that nine-to-five routine and immersing myself in my passion was loudly calling, and thanks to my good friends, I was able to escape with business covered for me.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li class=\"\">Why back to Scotland?<br>As a passionate Scottish lass and sailor &#8211; I cannot wait to show my new friends my sailing grounds, and hope that they will enjoy what they see and come back &#8211; just to sail in Scotland.<br>(As we are all now friends and I&#8217;m sure will remain so &#8211; adventure sailing creates these bonds!).<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ocean Sailing &#8211; Again ???<br\/>There is absolutely nothing quite like being a speck on the ocean, sailing under only the power of the wind and the sails, understanding and appreciating the majesty and glory of the stars and planets above you, to reset, rebase and release from the humdrum of &#8220;normality&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p>The sun, the moon, the planets, space station, shooting stars, DOLPHINS&#8230; the rise and fall of the sun and the moon, the daily rhythm of nature &#8211; all healing powers!<\/p>\n\n<p>No news, no Wi-Fi, a watch system, co-operation, collaboration &#8211; friendships born, cooking &amp; cleaning shared, chats, laughter, fun and a common goal&#8230;<\/p>\n\n<p>If you haven&#8217;t done it yet &#8211; get a move on. It is awesome!<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Fair Winds<br\/>Eileen<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>May 1st<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>We are finally on the final leg of our journey, Horta to Largs! The weather gave us an extra couple of days in Horta. The crew took full advantage, including a couple of great meals, and for some, a car rental with sightseeing around the island. Still, we&#8217;re all anxious to get started on our final leg.<\/p>\n\n<p>We&#8217;re getting tested early on this leg with high winds and heavy seas while sailing close-hauled. This has necessitated many manoeuvres that would make a ballerina jealous as we dart around below decks on watch change or prepare meals. The crew has become even closer as the sea state demands we work together on tasks that, under normal circumstances, we might accomplish on our own.<\/p>\n\n<p>While ashore, I had the opportunity, as part of watch leader training, to assist the captain in re-provisioning for the last leg. Finding food when all of the labels are in Portuguese, and food that is easy to find at home cannot be found. Procuring food in quantities sufficient for eleven crew members is a challenge, but once you fill a train of shopping carts, you have to move on to getting the food aboard and stowed. Next time we should just buy twenty-five boxes of energy bars and call it a day.<\/p>\n\n<p>Stopping now as the boat is moving the laptop in three directions at once.<\/p>\n\n<p>Eric P<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>24 avril<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Le 21e jour du voyage<\/strong> &#8211; non pas que quelqu&#8217;un tienne le compte. Les jours se m\u00e9langent, divis\u00e9s en quarts de 3 heures avec 6 heures de sommeil, des t\u00e2ches m\u00e9nag\u00e8res et encore du sommeil entre les deux. J&#8217;essaie de dormir la nuit et de rester \u00e9veill\u00e9 pendant la journ\u00e9e, mais une courte sieste apr\u00e8s le d\u00e9jeuner peut facilement se transformer en sommeil profond. Nous avons tous nos montres pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9es, et le calendrier roulant vous ram\u00e8ne \u00e0 votre montre pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9e tous les trois jours. Certains pr\u00e9f\u00e8rent les quarts de nuit &#8211; ciel d\u00e9gag\u00e9, bioluminescence et \u00e9toiles filantes &#8211; tandis que d&#8217;autres pr\u00e9f\u00e8rent le jour, avec les observations occasionnelles de dauphins et de baleines.    <\/p>\n\n<p>Nous pr\u00e9f\u00e9rons tous la voile au moteur, bien s\u00fbr, et heureusement, les vents nous ont \u00e9t\u00e9 favorables jusqu \u00ab \u00e0 pr\u00e9sent. Les longs quarts offrent de nombreuses possibilit\u00e9s de conversation. Au fur et \u00e0 mesure que nous apprenons \u00e0 mieux nous conna\u00eetre, il est tentant de passer des sujets s\u00fbrs de la vie \u00e0 la maison \u00e0 des sujets plus controvers\u00e9s, tels que la nature de la gravit\u00e9 et la politique suisse, qui sont tous rest\u00e9s dans la bonne humeur jusqu \u00bb \u00e0 pr\u00e9sent.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Avant ce voyage, je n&#8217;avais navigu\u00e9 que sur des bateaux plus petits : un catamaran de 14 pieds sur les eaux abrit\u00e9es de Kaneohe Bay, et un monocoque de 30 pieds dans l&#8217;archipel au nord de G\u00f6teborg. Passer de cette exp\u00e9rience \u00e0 la navigation oc\u00e9anique sur un Clipper de 60 pieds peut \u00eatre une le\u00e7on d&#8217;humilit\u00e9, mais cela offre \u00e9galement une nouvelle perspective. Les forces en jeu sont exponentiellement plus importantes et il faut plus de personnes pour tout faire, du hissage des voiles \u00e0 la prise de ris. Vous apprenez \u00e0 agir en tant que membre d&#8217;une \u00e9quipe, en utilisant au mieux les forces et les faiblesses de chacun. Mon interpr\u00e9tation de cette phrase est la suivante : soyez toujours pr\u00eats \u00e0 modifier et \u00e0 adapter vos plans en fonction des conditions qui pr\u00e9valent et des nouvelles informations, et ne vous en tenez pas obstin\u00e9ment \u00e0 une strat\u00e9gie simplement parce qu&#8217;elle vous semble plus facile \u00e0 mettre en \u0153uvre. <\/p>\n\n<p>Dans cette optique, notre plan initial &#8211; \u00e9labor\u00e9 par notre excellent chef de quart, Eric P (nous avons deux Eric \u00e0 bord), \u00e0 partir des informations m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques fournies par PredictWind Offshore et XYGrib &#8211; laissait pr\u00e9sager une course facile vers les A\u00e7ores, le long d&#8217;une ligne de rhumb presque directe. Mais non &#8211; \u00e0 deux jours des Bermudes, les dieux de la m\u00e9t\u00e9o nous ont lanc\u00e9 une balle courbe sous la forme de l&#8217;\u00e9ternel anticyclone des A\u00e7ores, qui a cr\u00e9\u00e9 un trou de vent assez important le long de notre route, avec une large zone de vents <em>&#8220;l\u00e9gers et merdiques&#8221;<\/em> (apparemment un terme technique, d&#8217;apr\u00e8s l&#8217;un de nos conseillers m\u00e9t\u00e9o). Sur les conseils du chef d&#8217;\u00e9quipe de Rubicon 3 (Ollie B), via nos connexions satellites, nous nous sommes dirig\u00e9s vers le nord-est pour trouver la bordure est d&#8217;un syst\u00e8me m\u00e9t\u00e9orologique. Cependant, ce syst\u00e8me s&#8217;est av\u00e9r\u00e9 insaisissable pendant deux jours et, \u00e0 un moment donn\u00e9, il semblait que nous allions passer directement au-dessus du site de l&#8217;\u00e9pave du Titanic.   <\/p>\n\n<p>Cela n&#8217;a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 le cas non plus, et avec un syst\u00e8me d\u00e9pressionnaire de plus en plus profond se dirigeant vers nous, il nous a \u00e9t\u00e9 conseill\u00e9 de nous pr\u00e9parer \u00e0 du gros temps. Nous nous sommes donc attel\u00e9s \u00e0 la pr\u00e9paration du bateau : gr\u00e9ement des voiles d&#8217;avant en temps voulu, rangement et s\u00e9curisation de tout le mat\u00e9riel et de l&#8217;\u00e9quipement inutiles. Cette fois, le temps s&#8217;est d\u00e9roul\u00e9 comme pr\u00e9vu, et avec notre trisail orange vif et notre Yankee 3, nous avons commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 naviguer \u00e0 8-10 n\u0153uds dans 25-30 n\u0153uds de vent avec une mer montante. Avec sa nouvelle tenue pour le gros temps, <em>Hummingbird<\/em> a pris tout cela \u00e0 bras-le-corps, et notre intr\u00e9pide \u00e9quipage s&#8217;est mis au diapason, barrant quart par quart dans des vents et des mers difficiles.   <\/p>\n\n<p>En discutant avec l&#8217;\u00e9quipage, tous ont \u00e9t\u00e9 surpris par la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 et la r\u00e9activit\u00e9 du <em>Hummingbird<\/em> &#8211; \u00e9tonnamment l\u00e9ger et \u00e9quilibr\u00e9 \u00e0 la barre. Malgr\u00e9 trois jours de tangage et de roulis in\u00e9vitables, tout le monde semble avoir trouv\u00e9 l&#8217;exp\u00e9rience de la navigation par gros temps (presque) agr\u00e9able, et fait partie int\u00e9grante de l&#8217;aventure qu&#8217;ils recherchaient. Je dirai personnellement qu&#8217;ils ont tous \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s performants.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Aujourd&#8217;hui, apr\u00e8s trois jours, nous venons de passer les \u00e9l\u00e9ments les plus forts et nous nous sommes faufil\u00e9s entre les vents et les mers les plus forts, bien aid\u00e9s par Ollie B, notre contact \u00e0 terre et notre m\u00e9t\u00e9orologue, qui est toujours omnipr\u00e9sent. Nous pr\u00e9voyons que les vents se calmeront au cours des prochains jours et que la mer suivra peu apr\u00e8s. Pour l&#8217;\u00e9quipage du Hummingbird, au cours des derni\u00e8res 24 heures, le vent a \u00e9t\u00e9 l&#8217;\u00e9l\u00e9ment essentiel que nous n&#8217;avons pas pu contr\u00f4ler. Malgr\u00e9 tous les efforts de ceux qui savent ce qu&#8217;ils font et de ceux qui ne le savent pas, \u00e0 force de voiles et de changements de cap, nous avons \u00e9chou\u00e9 dans notre qu\u00eate de l&#8217;insaisissable puissance naturelle essentielle pour atteindre notre objectif, Horta dans les A\u00e7ores, \u00e0 quelque 1 800 milles de distance. Ayant quitt\u00e9 les Bermudes mardi dernier avec des brises r\u00e9guli\u00e8res de force 4-5, le moral de l&#8217;\u00e9quipage \u00e9tait au beau fixe malgr\u00e9 quelques gros grains de pluie et mon bl\u00e2me public pour avoir sugg\u00e9r\u00e9 que les poivrons en d\u00e9s \u00e9taient un accompagnement appropri\u00e9 pour un risotto aux champignons. L&#8217;important \u00e9tait que nous naviguions, et g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement dans la bonne direction, en suivant la route du grand cercle pour intercepter les A\u00e7ores d&#8217;ici une semaine, vendredi.    <\/p>\n\n<p>Puis c&#8217;est arriv\u00e9, le journal de bord &#8211; un document trait\u00e9 avec r\u00e9v\u00e9rence et mis \u00e0 jour avec une fid\u00e9lit\u00e9 quasi religieuse \u00e0 chaque heure du voyage &#8211; indique qu&#8217;\u00e0 11 heures le jeudi matin, nous roulions ! Ce n&#8217;est pas pour cela que j&#8217;ai pay\u00e9, ont d\u00e9plor\u00e9 certains d&#8217;entre nous. Les membres de l&#8217;\u00e9quipage s&#8217;\u00e9taient r\u00e9unis pour diverses raisons afin d&#8217;entreprendre cette exp\u00e9dition, mais ils \u00e9taient unis dans un m\u00eame but : traverser un oc\u00e9an \u00e0 la voile. Malheureusement, pour que cela devienne une possibilit\u00e9 r\u00e9aliste, nous avions besoin de vent, et il n&#8217;y en avait pas, loin de l\u00e0, quoi que nous fassions. C&#8217;est donc sur un fond sonore incongru de Cyndi Lauper pr\u00f4nant que &#8220;les filles veulent juste s&#8217;amuser&#8221; que le moteur a \u00e9t\u00e9 mis en marche et que nous avons avanc\u00e9 p\u00e9niblement dans une direction enti\u00e8rement pr\u00e9visible et enti\u00e8rement contr\u00f4lable &#8211; ce qui n&#8217;est pas du tout satisfaisant.    <\/p>\n\n<p>La vie \u00e0 bord a pris un aspect beaucoup plus pr\u00e9visible et confortable, il est devenu plus facile de dormir, de ne pas \u00eatre roul\u00e9 par le talon du bateau ou de s&#8217;accrocher pour la vie si l&#8217;on est sur l&#8217;autre bord. Les man\u0153uvres sous le pont \u00e9taient beaucoup moins ardues et dangereuses, cuisiner devenait moins une \u00e9preuve physique et un acte de jonglerie, mais paradoxalement, une morosit\u00e9 palpable s&#8217;abattait sur l \u00ab \u00e9quipage. Les bavardages se sont tus et les rires se sont tus. M\u00eame la visite de dauphins \u00e0 trois reprises au cours de la journ\u00e9e n&#8217;a pas r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 remonter le moral au-del\u00e0 d&#8217;un &#8220;c&#8217;est charmant&#8221; ou d&#8217;un &#8220;je me demande \u00e0 quelle profondeur ils vont&#8221;, ou \u00e0 susciter des questions philosophiques telles que : &#8220;qui gagnerait dans une bagarre ? Qui gagnerait dans un combat, un dauphin ou un requin ? Cette nuit-l\u00e0, de 3 h \u00e0 6 h, nous avons eu l&#8217;impression d \u00bb \u00eatre \u00e0 bord d&#8217;un tapis roulant qui se d\u00e9pla\u00e7ait inexorablement dans la nuit noire de Dylan Thomas. Ni la lune ni les \u00e9toiles n&#8217;ont fait leur apparition pour \u00e9clairer notre progression banale.       <\/p>\n\n<p>Cependant, lorsque j&#8217;ai \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9veill\u00e9 par la lumi\u00e8re du soleil qui p\u00e9n\u00e9trait dans le petit hublot de mon peak avant, j&#8217;ai r\u00e9alis\u00e9 que ce n&#8217;\u00e9tait pas seulement l&#8217;arriv\u00e9e de l&#8217;aube qui m&#8217;avait r\u00e9veill\u00e9, mais aussi le bruit des cris et des claquements lorsque les voiles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 hiss\u00e9es une fois de plus. Le moteur s&#8217;est calm\u00e9 et Humingbird s&#8217;est \u00e9lanc\u00e9 vers l&#8217;avant dans une forte brise de force 4. <\/p>\n\n<p>Une fois sorti de ma couchette, j&#8217;ai commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 rebondir contre les cloisons pour me rendre \u00e0 la cuisine o\u00f9, avec Ian et Swiss Eric, nous avons pr\u00e9par\u00e9 un repas en nous calant contre la table et en nous appuyant sur le toit de la cuisine, ce qui \u00e9tait irritant, inconfortable et souvent douloureux, mais c&#8217;\u00e9tait parce que nous naviguions et que le Hummingbird \u00e9tait inclin\u00e9 alors qu&#8217;il reprenait sa course \u00e0 travers l&#8217;oc\u00e9an.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Je suis s\u00fbr que ce n&#8217;est pas seulement le soleil, l&#8217;eau irr\u00e9prochable et les cumulus cotonneux qui ont fait remonter le moral de l \u00ab \u00e9quipage, nous faisions ce pour quoi nous \u00e9tions venus &#8211; naviguer \u00e0 travers un oc\u00e9an, et m\u00eame si c \u00bb \u00e9tait inconfortable et parfois douloureux, nous faisions tous ce pour quoi nous \u00e9tions venus, naviguer \u00e0 nouveau. Nos sourires n&#8217;ont pas \u00e9t\u00e9 effac\u00e9s par l&#8217;annonce faite par Alex qu&#8217;en raison des hautes pressions sur la route circulaire vers les A\u00e7ores, nous devions nous diriger plus au nord pour maintenir des vents favorables, ce qui ajoute 200 milles \u00e0 la route &#8211; pas de probl\u00e8me &#8211; nous naviguerons jusqu&#8217;au bout et suivrons le conseil de Marc Aur\u00e8le de s&#8217;occuper avec diligence des choses qui sont sous notre contr\u00f4le, dans ce cas, en gardant un cap de 055 et en se rapprochant le plus possible d&#8217;un vent de travers. Gr\u00e2ce aux excellentes explications de Thorben et d&#8217;Alex, le r\u00e9sultat est tr\u00e8s satisfaisant. Le petit-d\u00e9jeuner a toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 une affaire personnelle, mais il est souvent arriv\u00e9 que des personnes prennent l&#8217;initiative de pr\u00e9parer des plats plus copieux pour leurs compagnons d \u00ab \u00e9quipage. Ce matin, il y avait du bacon et des \u0153ufs, ainsi que des haricots sur du pain grill\u00e9. Qui l&#8217;aurait cru, des haricots sur des toasts en guise de petit-d\u00e9jeuner. L&#8217;un des aspects les plus int\u00e9ressants de ces voyages est la possibilit\u00e9 de rencontrer des gens du monde entier et de tisser des liens avec eux. J&#8217;ai constat\u00e9 que la plupart des personnes qui sont plac\u00e9es dans la cuisine sont trop modestes lorsqu&#8217;il s&#8217;agit de leur capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 pr\u00e9parer un repas dans un espace restreint, limit\u00e9 aux ingr\u00e9dients disponibles. Il se peut qu&#8217;apr\u00e8s une nuit de surf sur de gros rouleaux, nous soyons tous trop affam\u00e9s pour \u00e9veiller nos papilles gustatives, mais je pr\u00e9f\u00e8re penser que lorsqu&#8217;ils ont l&#8217;occasion de faire quelque chose pour leurs compagnons d \u00bb \u00e9quipage, ils se surpassent pour d\u00e9montrer leur engagement envers le moral des autres personnes \u00e0 bord. Le capitaine et son second sont particuli\u00e8rement attentionn\u00e9s \u00e0 l \u00ab \u00e9gard des personnes \u00e0 bord. La nuit derni\u00e8re, \u00e0 quatre heures du matin, un plat chaud de pop-corn est myst\u00e9rieusement apparu dans le cockpit alors que l \u00bb \u00e9quipage sur le pont \u00e9tait occup\u00e9 \u00e0 surfer sur les vagues.        <\/p>\n\n<p>La journ\u00e9e de navigation a \u00e9t\u00e9 exceptionnelle. Nous avons eu des journ\u00e9es formidables jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent, mais aujourd&#8217;hui nous avons eu des conditions oc\u00e9aniques parfaites. Une mer de l&#8217;arri\u00e8re et des vents de force 5\/6 ont donn\u00e9 l&#8217;impression de conduire le bateau comme une planche de surf de 60 pieds. Nous avons eu la chance d&#8217;atteindre des vitesses proches de 12 n\u0153uds sous un ciel ensoleill\u00e9 avec seulement quelques cirrus pour nous aider \u00e0 garder le cap.   <\/p>\n\n<p>J&#8217;ai rejoint l&#8217;\u00e9quipage en tant que chef de quart pour v\u00e9rifier un point de plus sur la liste de contr\u00f4le du RYA Yachtmaster Ocean. Je n&#8217;aurais pas pu choisir un meilleur voyage et un meilleur groupe de membres d&#8217;\u00e9quipage pour faire le voyage. L \u00ab \u00e9quipage a eu droit \u00e0 des vents r\u00e9guliers, \u00e0 des nuits envo\u00fbtantes sous une vo\u00fbte d \u00bb \u00e9toiles et \u00e0 de nombreux poissons volants rasant les vagues. Le moral est au beau fixe apr\u00e8s cette incroyable travers\u00e9e.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Nous sommes ici pour 24 heures afin de faire le plein, de nous rafra\u00eechir et d&#8217;avoir un aper\u00e7u de la vie insulaire avant de reprendre la mer &#8211; prochaine \u00e9tape : les A\u00e7ores ( <a><\/a>) (peut-\u00eatre &#8211; v\u00e9rification de la m\u00e9t\u00e9o \u00e0 venir). L&#8217;aventure atlantique continue. <\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-day-6-april-12-2025-en-route-to-bermuda\"><strong>Jour 6 12 avril 2025<\/strong> en route vers les Bermudes<\/h4>\n\n<p><strong>031\u00b0 52.249N, 064\u00b0 43.609W \/ Cap : 50\u00b0 @ 5.4 noeuds<\/strong><br\/><\/p>\n\n<p>Nous continuons \u00e0 zigzaguer \u00e0 travers l&#8217;Atlantique Nord, m\u00eame si notre barre s&#8217;est am\u00e9lior\u00e9e, et il ne nous reste plus que 200 milles nautiques \u00e0 parcourir avant de poser le pied sur la terre ferme, o\u00f9 se trouve le bermuda.<\/p>\n\n<p>En naviguant \u00e0 une vitesse de 8 n\u0153uds sur le Reef 1, la Staysail et le Yankee 3, le soleil et la pluie se disputent la premi\u00e8re place, chacun ayant son tour. La deuxi\u00e8me image met en \u00e9vidence un flux de sud-ouest bien d\u00e9fini, r\u00e9sultant d&#8217;un gradient de pression entre un anticyclone au sud et une d\u00e9pression en formation plus au nord sur le milieu de l&#8217;Atlantique. Ce flux est canalis\u00e9 le long du bord nord de la cr\u00eate subtropicale.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Le Hummingbird se trouve \u00e0 l&#8217;adresse <a><\/a>pour profiter de ce couloir de vent favorable du sud-ouest, indiqu\u00e9 par la zone verte au sud de la bande bleue (environ 15-20 n\u0153uds). Cela permet d&#8217;\u00e9viter les vents contraires plus forts et plus turbulents (indiqu\u00e9s en orange fonc\u00e9 \u00e0 rouge, 25-30 n\u0153uds) au nord, qui sont associ\u00e9s aux gradients de pression plus serr\u00e9s \u00e0 l&#8217;avant de la limite frontale. Apr\u00e8s avoir pris le relais, nous nous sommes relay\u00e9s \u00e0 la barre, en faisant le guet et en buvant du chocolat chaud \u00e0 la lumi\u00e8re de la lune. \u00c0 l&#8217;approche de 6 heures du matin, la lumi\u00e8re de la lune s&#8217;est dissip\u00e9e et nous nous sommes retrouv\u00e9s sous une couverture d&#8217;\u00e9toiles pour guider le navire.  <\/p>\n\n<p>J&#8217;ai \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9veill\u00e9 de ma sieste d&#8217;apr\u00e8s quart par le son bienvenu de notre skipper qui demandait si quelqu&#8217;un avait envie d&#8217;un bacon butty. Un bacon et des \u0153ufs sur un oc\u00e9an l\u00e9g\u00e8rement ondulant, tout en surveillant les navires et la faune, c&#8217;est tout \u00e0 fait recommandable. Nous n&#8217;avons pas revu les globic\u00e9phales, les dauphins ou les poissons volants que nous avons vus jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent, mais il y a encore deux autres quarts pour cela aujourd&#8217;hui.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Le besoin d&#8217;ajustements ayant \u00e9t\u00e9 moindre jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent, nous avons eu le temps de pratiquer des n\u0153uds et d&#8217;en apprendre davantage sur les situations dans lesquelles nous les utiliserons.<\/p>\n\n<p>Il semble que nous soyons \u00e0 mi-chemin des Bermudes et que nous prenions du temps, m\u00eame si les deux derniers jours ont \u00e9t\u00e9 des jours o\u00f9 il fallait profiter de l&#8217;instant pr\u00e9sent.<\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>May 10th 26 miles to the waypoint. 7.1 knots boat speed.
