Starling back through the Kiel canal to the Dutch Frisian Islands

Posted in : Starling

We started our mammoth passage on Thursday at 0500 from Laboe marina en route to Vlieland in the Dutch Frisian islands, some 245 nm.
Much of the trip was under motorsail but we did enjoy a sailing passage with F4 south westerlies.
We started off waiting to enter the Kiel canal & whilst awaiting entry the skipper demonstrated how to helm in a confined space ( see navionics track😂)!
We completed the 90km canal in daylight keeping well out the way of the huge container ships, exiting into the river Elbe in the evening to start the night passage.
For some of Starlings crew this was not only the first time sailing but a first overnight passage. Angela was in awe of the nighttime sights with shooting stars & a plethora of lights to test our new found navigation skills.
An evening curry was eaten underway fitted in around our 3 hour watches. Training for the three competent crew continues as well as revision for buoyage, lights & collision regs.
We finally entered Vlieland marina at low tide as per our passage plan at 2000 hrs Friday evening. The marina was packed & we rafted against a classic Dutch barge, celebrating our arrival with a glass of wine, ready for a fun rest day on the island.
