Course Syllabus

RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Theory

The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Theory course develops the advanced knowledge of navigation, meteorology, passage planning and safety required for those aiming for the Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore certificates. It builds on Day Skipper theory and prepares sailors to skipper yachts on extended offshore passages, both by day and night.

Position
Understands how to fix a position using visual bearings, transits, soundings and GPS. Can plot estimated positions, account for leeway and tidal stream, and use advanced methods of position fixing with accuracy.

The Magnetic Compass
Understands variation, deviation, and the use of deviation cards. Can apply corrections to convert between compass and true bearings, and appreciates the causes and effects of compass errors.

Tides
Has a thorough understanding of tidal theory and can calculate tidal heights at standard and secondary ports. Can work with tidal stream atlases, calculate tidal set and drift, and apply these to fix position and plan courses.

Buoyage
Understands the IALA buoyage system for Regions A and B, including lateral, cardinal, isolated danger, safe water and special marks. Can apply this knowledge to pilotage in varied conditions.

Lights
Recognises the lights of vessels and navigational marks, and understands their significance both for collision avoidance and safe pilotage.

Pilotage
Can prepare detailed pilotage plans using tidal information, transits, clearing lines, lights and soundings. Understands buoy positions and leading lines, and can apply methods of pilotage in restricted waters.

GNSS and Chart Plotters
Understands the principles of satellite navigation and electronic chart plotters. Is aware of the limitations of GNSS and electronic navigation systems, and the importance of cross-checking with traditional methods.

Echo Sounders
Understands the operation and use of echo sounders, and can interpret depth information accurately.

Log, Speed and Distance
Understands the use of the log as a navigational instrument, and can calculate speed, distance and estimated time of arrival. Can make allowance for tidal stream and leeway.

Meteorology
Has a thorough understanding of weather systems, pressure patterns, and local effects. Can interpret synoptic charts and forecasts, recognise weather trends at sea, and apply this knowledge to passage planning and decision-making.

Rules of the Road
Has an in-depth knowledge of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs), including lights, shapes, sound signals, and conduct of vessels in all conditions.

Safety at Sea
Understands the use of safety equipment, lifejackets, harnesses and lifelines. Is familiar with distress signals, emergency procedures, liferaft use, and the principles of heavy weather sailing and jury rigging.

Passage Planning
Can prepare comprehensive passage plans, including routes, pilotage plans, tidal calculations, weather considerations, and contingency plans. Understands the legal requirements for passage planning and the responsibilities of the skipper.

Navigation in Restricted Visibility
Understands the challenges of navigating in fog and poor visibility, and can apply COLREGs, radar and sound signals appropriately. Can plan and execute safe navigation using both electronic and traditional methods.

The Marine Environment
Understands the responsibilities of the skipper and crew to minimise pollution and protect the marine environment. Is aware of relevant regulations and good practice for sustainable sailing.
