For our mates, we are not looking for the finished article. We want hungry, determined stars of the future. Joining as a Rubicon 3 mate is a fantastic and rare opportunity for hugely enthusiastic and committed commercially endorsed Yachtmasters to mate on the Rubicon 3 Clipper 60s, as they sail the northern hemisphere, with routes including the Faroes, Norway, Iceland, Morocco, transatlantics and more.  You will make big gains in your seamanship and sailing skills, learning from expert skippers. Rubicon 3 will also train you in electrical, diesel, first aid, astro navigation and such like. If your performance is of a high enough level, you will be invited to join our Skipper Development Program, through which we will help you build the skills and experience you need over the following 24 months to skipper Rubicon 3 expeditions.

The role

You will be the full-time mate on a Clipper 60 while it sails on a series of adventures. You will assist in running the trips, using your existing skills and knowledge to keep clients safe, happy and learning key sailing skills. You will help train them in sail trim, navigation, pilotage, power handling and generally ensure they are having a fantastic sailing adventure. You will also be responsible for overseeing the maintenance of the yacht while it is on expedition. It will be your responsibility to ensure that the yacht is kept in an immaculate and seaworthy state. This will include servicing of engines, gel coat repair, whipping and splicing of lines, cleaning and drying equipment, painting and all the other tasks that inevitably come up during the course of a season.

You will also be tasked with producing media content for our blogs and social media, using cameras, drones and written articles.

Your working environment

You will live on a Clipper 60 for the duration of your 6 month contract. While these are expedition yachts, and definitely not luxury yachts, they are large and spacious, with heating, hot water and TV so they are easy to live on. Before and after each 12 day expedition, you will have the weekend off, and every second expedition you will have a full week of downtime to work on the maintenance of the yacht. The expeditions can be quite busy and hectic on board, while the downtime will often just be you on board, so you need to be comfortable with both environments. Your weekends and downtime will usually be in spectacular parts of the world, so it is a great opportunity to do some exploring.

Who we are looking for

You need to be a commercially endorsed Yachtmaster, and while it would be good if you were also a cruising instructor, it is absolutely not essential. What is essential is to have a superb attitude and an absolute focus to build a career in bigger boat, professional sailing. You need to be hungry to learn, self-motivated, willing at times to work some very long hours, have no issue with cleaning out blocked poo pipes and scrubbing bilges and be absolutely willing to put the experience of the customers and the condition of your boat first. The contract means you will be away for around 6 months, so you need to not have commitments that will hinder that.

What we will give you

You will be an integral part of the Rubicon 3 team, one of Europe’s most exciting adventure sailing companies. You will gain that invaluable breakthrough into bigger boats and will make huge gains in your sailing skills and seamanship. You will learn how to sail in the higher latitudes to places like Norway and Iceland and how to cross oceans. As importantly, you will learn how to run and maintain this type of vessel. At sea, you will receive structured training and development from a variety of superb skippers. On land, you will receive mechanical and electrical training from our Royal Navy engineer. Your success will be integral to our success and we will train you in all the skills you need to excel in the role.

You will also be sent on a drone flying course and given guidance on photographic and writing skills to help you produce exceptional content.

Where does it lead to

Rubicon 3 is committed to training and developing its next generation of skippers and those mates who excel in the first 6-month contract will be invited to join our Skipper Development Program. In this program, we will mentor you over the next 24 months, helping you get a high level of skills and qualifications, introducing you to various roles and people in the industry, and ultimately getting you to skipper your first trips, with a fully qualified skipper acting as your mate. For those who meet the grade, you will then be invited to skipper full Rubicon 3 expeditions and sail all around the world on these huge adventures. Skippers generally only join the boat for 4 weeks at a time, so with your sought after skills and experience, you will also be well placed to build a portfolio of roles and take advantage of many exciting opportunities in the industry.
