Dates, Prices & Travel

Sail the wild spine of the southern Leeward Islands, exploring the volcanic coastline of Martinique, the deep rainforest and peaks of Dominica and the breathtaking Saintes of Guadeloupe. This route takes you through one of the most varied sections of the Caribbean. sailing between steep green mountains, quiet offshore anchorages, exploring river systems that cut deep into jungle and small coastal settlements. Approaching these islands by sea allows you to explore magical places and landscapes that most visitors never reach.

What this voyage is really about

This is hands-on Caribbean expedition sailing. From day one you are involved in helming, sail trim, navigating and planning 6-8 hour passages across open water between the islands. Expect steady, warm trade winds, remote and wild anchorages and wonderful times ashore to explore. Life on board is active and collaborative. The skipper and mate guide you through each aspect of the sailing so you become fully involved, gaining real skill and confidence as the voyage develops.

Why this route stands out

Dominica, Guadeloupe and Martinique form the most dramatic section of the Leewards, with volcanic peaks, rainforest walking routes, river inlets and a coastline that delights. The distances between the islands give a good rhythm of daily sailing and time ashore, while the varied landscapes make every landfall different. It is a route for sailors who want real seamanship, elemental environments and exploration rather than gentle cruising. With the wonderful islands of St Lucia and Antigua at either end, this is one of the perennial Rubicon 3 favourites.

Who this trip suits

You do not need previous sailing experience, but you do need to want proper involvement. This is an expedition shaped by the conditions at the time. It works well for solo crew and for travellers of all ages who want to be part of the team. If you are keen to get fully involved, explore wild places and learn new skills, you will get a great deal from this voyage.

Discretionary tipping of the Rubicon 3 crew

We’ve priced this trip 5-10% lower than we otherwise would to allow you the option, at the end of your adventure, to offer a discretionary tip to the Rubicon 3 skipper and mate if you feel they’ve provided exceptional service. A combined tip of 5-10% is suggested but is entirely at your discretion and based on your satisfaction with their performance. See our FAQs here.

Got Questions? We’re Here to Help!

We get it – joining a major sailing adventure is a big decision, and it’s natural to have lots of questions before you book. Wondering who else will be onboard? What the experience will be like? These and many more questions are completely normal. While our homepage and FAQs provide loads of info, we know sometimes it’s best to talk it through. Don’t hesitate to contact us by phone, email, or live chat (at the bottom of the screen). Better yet, we’d suggest you schedule a call. Most crew who join do and find it really useful. We can discuss your options, answer every question, and make sure you’re booking on the perfect trip for you.

This is an expedition, not a fixed tour. The skipper, mate and you the crew look at the wind and weather each day and agree the best plan. Conditions in the Leewards can shift, and this flexibility allows us to reach more remote anchorages and explore places most visitors never see. The trip runs in both directions, so the sequence of islands may vary, but the character of the voyage remains the same. The outline below gives a sense of what a typical passage includes.

St Lucia

st lucia pitons

If your voyage begins in St Lucia, we start among steep volcanic peaks and deep natural bays. The Pitons dominate the skyline and give one of the most dramatic departures in the Caribbean. Marigot Bay and the coastline south towards Soufrière offer sheltered anchorages beneath high green slopes, hot springs ashore and excellent pilotage practice along a rugged shoreline. It is a strong introduction to the trade winds and a good place to get involved with helming and boat handling before the first island crossing

Martinique

Martinique slaves

We sail north to Martinique and begin with short coastal passages along its volcanic western shoreline. Anchorages like Sainte Anne and Anse d’Arlet offer turquoise water, white sand beaches, steep green jungle clad slopes and excellent snorkelling. Moving north the landscape becomes more rugged, with the rainforest clad flanks of Mount Pelée dominating the coast. This early part of the voyage is ideal for building confidence with helming and navigating in steady trade winds.

Dominica

Indian River Dominica

The crossing to Dominica is often one of the most rewarding sails of the route. The island rises abruptly from the sea, with high ridges and deep valleys creating a dramatic landfall. We usually allow a full day ashore here. Options include paddling the Indian River through dense mangroves, walking rainforest trails towards hot springs or visiting the small capital of Roseau with its strong island character. Dominica is the wildest island in the chain and a highlight for many.

Guadeloupe

guadeloupe

We continue north to Guadeloupe, beginning on the mountainous western island of Basse-Terre. Anchorages here sit beneath jungle covered slopes, with waterfalls and river valleys cutting into the interior. We’ll explore ashore and make short coastal hops to find sheltered overnight stops. It is an excellent area for practising pilotage, sail trim and boat handling in varied conditions.

Îles des Saintes

South of Guadeloupe lies the Saintes, a small group of islands with stunningly clear water, atmospheric quiet streets and magical anchorages. These are some of the most wonderful islands in the Caribbean and a very special place to explore that so many cannot reach.

Antigua

antigua shirley heights

We make our final passage north to Antigua. Approaching Antigua by sea is always impressive, with its indented coastline, hills and numerous anchorages. Depending on conditions, we may stop at quiet bays on the way in or head straight for the historic harbour on the south coast.
