Sailing offshore from the Bahamas to New York City

From the turquoise shallows and coral-studded anchorages of the Bahamas to the towering skyline of New York City, this 1,000-mile voyage is bluewater passagemaking at its very best. We begin with two or three days sailing and training in the warm, crystal-clear waters of the Bahamas. We will learn and practise key offshore skills, from sail handling and watchkeeping to navigation and weather routing. Then we head north and chase the Gulf Stream, harnessing its powerful current wherever possible as the Atlantic swells roll beneath us. We sail day and night, rotating through watches, steering under the stars, and making landfall decisions guided entirely by the weather. If conditions allow, we may step ashore in Charleston, South Carolina, a city steeped in maritime history and southern charm, and Norfolk, Virginia, home to one of the world’s great natural harbours and the mighty US Navy. The days at sea are all about the unique rhythm and experiences of ocean life, with dawns breaking over open water, dolphins riding the bow wave, and nights where the Milky Way arches overhead. Our final approach into New York Harbour, with the Statue of Liberty rising ahead and the Manhattan skyline unfolding, is one of the most iconic and unforgettable arrivals in all of sailing.

Discretionary tipping of the Rubicon 3 crew

We’ve priced this trip 5-10% lower than we otherwise would to allow you the option, at the end of your adventure, to offer a discretionary tip to the Rubicon 3 skipper and mate if you feel they’ve provided exceptional service. A combined tip of 5-10% is suggested but is entirely at your discretion and based on your satisfaction with their performance. See our FAQs here.

Got Questions? We’re Here to Help!

We get it – joining a major sailing adventure is a big decision, and it’s natural to have lots of questions before you book. Wondering who else will be onboard? What the experience will be like? These and many more questions are completely normal. While our homepage and FAQs provide loads of info, we know sometimes it’s best to talk it through. Don’t hesitate to contact us by phone, email, or live chat (at the bottom of the screen). Better yet, we’d suggest you schedule a call. Most crew who join do and find it really useful. We can discuss your options, answer every question, and make sure you’re booking on the perfect trip for you.

We begin in Nassau, Bahamas, with two to three days of training, sailing, and exploring the surrounding islands. You’ll get hands-on experience with sail handling, watch systems, and navigation while enjoying sheltered anchorages, coral reefs, and white-sand beaches. This is the perfect warm-water start to prepare for the serious ocean miles ahead.

From here, we turn north in search of the Gulf Stream, the powerful ocean current that runs up the US East Coast. In this region it’s typically found 20–50 miles offshore, and when we catch it, the 2 – 4 knot boost can transform our daily runs. Combined with the prevailing south-easterly winds at this time of year, it’s an ideal recipe for fast, exhilarating sailing. The open ocean stretches ahead, and the next week will be defined by the rhythm of life at sea: helming under the stars, trimming sails to match the swell, and making the most of nature’s conveyor belt north.

The exact route we take and where we stop is dictated entirely by the weather, sea state, and timing and it will be different every year. Our ideal is to have a first leg as  the 500-mile, c. three-day and night passage to Charleston, South Carolina. This is one of the most beautiful cities on the US East Coast, famed for its cobbled streets, pastel-coloured antebellum houses, and a waterfront steeped in maritime history.

Charelston usa sailing destination

From Charleston, we’d like to push on for the 350-mile, two to two-and-a-half-day leg to Norfolk, Virginia.  Norfolk boasts one of the largest natural harbours in the world, a rich naval heritage, historic ships, the US Navy and a lively waterfront atmosphere.

This would leave a final 230-mile push. around a day and a half at sea, to one of the most iconic landfalls in all of sailing. As the Atlantic swells give way to the calm waters of New York Harbour, the Statue of Liberty rises ahead and the Manhattan skyline unfurls on the horizon. Sailing into this harbour, past one of the world’s most recognisable landmarks, is a moment you will carry for a lifetime and is the perfect finale to an epic offshore passage. The actual route and stops we make when you join us will all be discovered at the time when we see the weather and that is the adventure of ocean sailing.
