Sail from the rugged north coast of Newfoundland across the Labrador Sea to Greenland’s glacier carved west coast on a serious high latitude sailing expedition. This 18 day adventure begins from St John’s on Newfoundland’s east coast, a historic departure point for countless North Atlantic and high latitude expeditions. Icebergs drift past the coast here band conditions dictate the pace from the outset. After some coastal training and exploring, we head explore north east into colder, ever more remote waters, following the north shore of Newfoundland, toward Fogo Island, Twillingate and toward St Anthony’s. We may continue a little further up the coast of Labrador but come the right weather window, we set off across the Labrador Sea for a spectacular c. 650 mile (4.5 day) offshore sail to Greenland, navigating iceberg prone waters under the long light of the Arctic summer and through significant whale breeding grounds. Landfall is so dramatic as we reach Greenland’s mountains and fjords. After a rest, we explore our way north, threading our way between islands and ice filled fjords before finishing in Nuuk.
What this voyage is really about
This is a proper Arctic expedition. From day one you are part of the crew, standing watch, helming, navigating, managing sails, and being fully involved in decisions as we sail through one of the most beautiful and awe inspiring regions of the planet. Expect mostly coastal sailing in very remote areas with few if any facilities, re-provisioning from local communities and harbours. We will sail to somewhere new each day, leaving time to jump off and explore ashore. This is a very achievable but serious undertaking. Days are focused and purposeful as the skipper and mate work closely with you throughout, building your skills, confidence and judgement in high latitude sailing.
Why this route stands out
Quite simply, this is one of the most prized routes in expedition sailing, exploring some of the most remote, wild and awe inspiring regions in the northern hemisphere. Very few sailing routes combine high latitude coastal exploration and a major crossing such as the Labrador Sea which is a genuine test of offshore skill and decision making. Newfoundland, Labrador and Greenland mean remote whales, vast fjords, floating ice, and settlements that can only be reached by sea.
Who this trip suits
This trip suits those who have some previous sailing experience and who are looking for a once in a lifetime type fo adventure such as they have read about in books growing up. Some overnight or offshore experience is advisable but not essential and you do not need previous Arctic sailing experience. This type of expedition suits those who can bring the right mindset. The yacht is powerful, warm and exceptionally safe, but you will be in icy conditions, standing night watches far offshore, and living far from the creature comforts that shore life gets us used to. Flexibility of approach is essential, as routes and stops are dictated by weather and ice, rather than being a fixed itinerary. If you are looking for a wow without the work, this is not the right trip. If you want to develop real confidence in high latitude sailing, gain experience that fundamentally changes how you approach sailing, and complete a spectacular artic expedition that will stay with you for a lifetime, this route is exactly right for you.
