Sail from the rugged north coast of Newfoundland across the Labrador Sea to Greenland’s glacier carved west coast on a serious high latitude sailing expedition. This 18 day adventure begins from St John’s on Newfoundland’s east coast, a historic departure point for countless North Atlantic and high latitude expeditions. Icebergs drift past the coast here band conditions dictate the pace from the outset. After some coastal training and exploring, we head explore north east into colder, ever more remote waters, following the north shore of Newfoundland, toward Fogo Island, Twillingate and toward St Anthony’s. We may continue a little further up the coast of Labrador but come the right weather window, we set off across the Labrador Sea for a spectacular c. 650 mile (4.5 day) offshore sail to Greenland, navigating iceberg prone waters under the long light of the Arctic summer and through significant whale breeding grounds. Landfall is so dramatic as we reach Greenland’s mountains and fjords. After a rest, we explore our way north, threading our way between islands and ice filled fjords before finishing in Nuuk.

What this voyage is really about

This is a proper Arctic expedition. From day one you are part of the crew, standing watch, helming, navigating, managing sails, and being fully involved in decisions as we sail through one of the most beautiful and awe inspiring regions of the planet. Expect mostly coastal sailing in very remote areas with few if any facilities, re-provisioning from local communities and harbours. We will sail to somewhere new each day, leaving time to jump off and explore ashore. This is a very achievable but serious undertaking. Days are focused and purposeful as the skipper and mate work closely with you throughout, building your skills, confidence and judgement in high latitude sailing.

Why this route stands out

Quite simply, this is one of the most prized routes in expedition sailing, exploring some of the most remote, wild and awe inspiring regions in the northern hemisphere. Very few sailing routes combine high latitude coastal exploration and a major crossing such as the Labrador Sea which is a genuine test of offshore skill and decision making. Newfoundland, Labrador and Greenland mean remote whales, vast fjords, floating ice, and settlements that can only be reached by sea.

Who this trip suits

This trip suits those who have some previous sailing experience  and who are looking for a once in a lifetime type fo adventure such as they have read about in books growing up. Some overnight or offshore experience is advisable but not essential and you do not need previous Arctic sailing experience. This type of expedition suits those who can bring the right mindset. The yacht is powerful, warm and exceptionally safe, but you will be in icy conditions, standing night watches far offshore, and living far from the creature comforts that shore life gets us used to. Flexibility of approach is essential, as routes and stops are dictated by weather and ice, rather than being a fixed itinerary. If you are looking for a wow without the work, this is not the right trip. If you want to develop real confidence in high latitude sailing, gain experience that fundamentally changes how you approach sailing, and complete a spectacular artic expedition that will stay with you for a lifetime, this route is exactly right for you.

Discretionary tipping of the Rubicon 3 crew

We’ve priced this trip 5-10% lower than we otherwise would to allow you the option, at the end of your adventure, to offer a discretionary tip to the Rubicon 3 skipper and mate if you feel they’ve provided exceptional service. A combined tip of 5-10% is suggested but is entirely at your discretion and based on your satisfaction with their performance. See our FAQs here.

Got Questions? We’re Here to Help!

We get it – joining a major sailing adventure is a big decision, and it’s natural to have lots of questions before you book. Wondering who else will be onboard? What the experience will be like? These and many more questions are completely normal. While our homepage and FAQs provide loads of info, we know sometimes it’s best to talk it through. Don’t hesitate to contact us by phone, email, or live chat (at the bottom of the screen). Better yet, we’d suggest you schedule a call. Most crew who join do and find it really useful. We can discuss your options, answer every question, and make sure you’re booking on the perfect trip for you.

As with all real high latitude routes, the wind and weather will determine the exact route. Conditions may speed our progress, hold us in harbour, or open opportunities we hadn’t planned at all. We carry a broad outline of intended stops, but the final track is shaped by tides, forecasts and the judgement of the skipper. What follows is a guide to the main areas we aim to explore along the way.

St John’s and Conception Bay

concept bay

We begin in St John’s and Conception Bay, one of Newfoundland’s classic sailing areas. Sheltered waters give us time to settle into the boat, complete safety routines, and find our rhythm as a crew before heading north into more exposed waters.

Bonavista and the North East Coast

bonav

We work north along the Bonavista Peninsula and Newfoundland’s north east coast, an exposed and weather hewed shoreline with longer distances between harbours. Small fishing communities and high cliffs, define this stretch as we push steadily north. A trip to the UNESCO Dungeon geosite is a must if we can

Fogo Island and Twillingate

fg nl

Twillingate and Fogo embody everything so many Newfoundland and Labrador outports are famous for: stunningly rugged coastline, historical, picturesque streets, and gorgeous coast. Look for whales, dolphins, harp seals, seabirds, and icebergs. We’ll hope to get to Long Point Lighthouse, which looks out over the distant reaches of Notre Dame Bay.

Great Harbour Deep and St Anthony

GHD

Further north, we aim for Great Harbour Deep, one of the finest natural harbours on the coast, before continuing to St Anthony. This marks our likely last  stop before committing offshore, with conditions increasingly dictating pace and decisions.

Across the Labrador Sea

offshore sailing

We leave Newfoundland astern and commit to the crossing of the Labrador Sea. This is a serious but magical offshore passage of around 650 miles (4.5 days), with highly variable weather, the possibilities of icebergs, heavy concentrations of whales and long daylight hours shaping life on board.

Greenland Landfall – Paamiut

gnld

Landfall likley comes at Paamiut on Greenland’s west coast. After days offshore, the scale changes immediately, with steep mountains, fjords, and ice defining the landscape as we enter Arctic waters.

West Coast of Greenland to Nuuk

greenland

We spend our remaining days sailing north along Greenland’s west coast, making three or four stops as conditions allow. Small settlements, remote anchorages, and vast fjords lead us on to a final arrival into Nuuk.
