Dates, Prices & Travel

This hybrid mile builder distils the most valuable elements of our longer Passage Making Masterclass into a shorter, more intensive format, combining structured training with serious mileage in the technical waters between Scotland and Ireland. Over six days you will sail around the Irish Sea, mixing daytime and overnight passages, working rotating watches, and gaining hands on experience of tidal planning, traffic separation schemes, headlands, and the variable conditions typical of the area. The route blends coastal and open water sailing and provides a focused step towards advanced qualifications, longer offshore passages, or confident independent cruising.

Who this training suits

This mile builder is best suited to sailors who already have some basic experience and want to move beyond day sails and weekend cruising. It is particularly relevant if you are feeling rusty, want to build miles and confidence, are preparing for longer offshore passages, or want to test yourself with overnight and watch system sailing. This is not a stop start coastal cruise, but a structured training passage.

Learning from Rubicon 3 expedition skippers

Training is only as good as the people leading it. This mile builder is led by a Rubicon 3 expedition skipper with extensive experience in offshore and Arctic passage making. You will be fully involved in navigation, sail handling, passage planning, and watch leadership, gaining high quality insight into how these passages are planned, executed, and managed in real world conditions.

Discretionary tipping of the Rubicon 3 crew

We’ve priced this trip 5-10% lower than we otherwise would to allow you the option, at the end of your adventure, to offer a discretionary tip to the Rubicon 3 skipper and mate if you feel they’ve provided exceptional service. A combined tip of 5-10% is suggested but is entirely at your discretion and based on your satisfaction with their performance. See our FAQs here.

Got Questions? We’re Here to Help!

We get it – joining a major sailing adventure is a big decision, and it’s natural to have lots of questions before you book. Wondering who else will be onboard? What the experience will be like? These and many more questions are completely normal. While our homepage and FAQs provide loads of info, we know sometimes it’s best to talk it through. Don’t hesitate to contact us by phone, email, or live chat (at the bottom of the screen). Better yet, we’d suggest you schedule a call. Most crew who join do and find it really useful. We can discuss your options, answer every question, and make sure you’re booking on the perfect trip for you.

This mile builder is a hybrid of our longer Passage Making Masterclass and a usual mile builder. It is structured as a continuous training passage led by Rubicon 3 expedition skippers, rather than a fixed route with predetermined stops. Every leg is shaped by weather, sea state, and tides, with decisions explained and discussed as the passage unfolds. Throughout the trip, instruction is woven into daily sailing, giving you direct insight into how experienced skippers think, plan, and adapt at sea.

Coastal and open water passage making

crew at sea in foulies

The route blends coastal sailing with longer open water legs across the Irish Sea. You will experience the differences between sailing close to land and committing to open water, including route selection, sail planning, and managing changing conditions as the coastline drops away. This reflects the reality of many UK and near continental passages.

Heavy weather preparation and boat handling

storm sails

While always sailing within safe limits, the Irish Sea frequently provides opportunities to practise sailing in stronger winds and unsettled conditions. Under close supervision, you will develop confidence in reefing, sail changes, boat trim, and maintaining control as conditions build, learning how experienced skippers anticipate weather changes and adjust plans accordingly.

Downwind sailing and spinnaker handling

sailing yacht under spinnaker

Where conditions allow, there will be opportunities to practise downwind sailing techniques, including spinnaker work. You will take part in hoists, gybes, and drops on a larger yacht, learning how to manage sails efficiently and safely as part of a coordinated watch.

Commercial traffic and collision avoidance

IRPCS collision avoidance

This area is busy with commercial shipping, providing valuable experience of collision avoidance, radar use, AIS interpretation, and operating around traffic separation schemes. Instruction focuses on assessing risk early, making clear decisions, and understanding how professional skippers manage traffic in confined waters.

Passage planning, pilotage and port entries

Crew navigating on a chart

You will be closely involved in passage planning throughout the trip, from initial chartwork and tidal calculations to selecting routes, timings, and contingency options. Planning does not stop once underway, and you will see how plans are reviewed and adjusted as conditions change. This feeds directly into pilotage and port entries, where approaches are planned around tides, weather, and traffic, and executed with clear roles, effective lookout management, and disciplined teamwork.

Night sailing and watch systems

Night sailing red head torches

This passage includes significant night sailing, giving you proper experience of standing watch, helming, navigating, and managing fatigue in darkness. You will work within a rotating watch system, learning how effective watches operate on longer passages and how clear communication and discipline keep the boat running safely through the night.
