Dates, Prices & Travel

Sail through lands of legend, where the misty Hebrides melt into the open North Atlantic and the volcanic cliffs of the Faroes rise like giants from the sea. This is “Trolls, Giants & Elves” – a hands-on sailing adventure from Scotland to the Faroe Islands.

We begin on Scotland’s west coast, weaving through the Inner and Outer Hebrides. There’s time to anchor in quiet bays, sail past remote headlands, and get a feel for the boat before heading offshore. Then we turn north, setting out on a 36-hour passage across open sea. You’ll join a full watch system, taking the helm, trimming sails, navigating, and logging our progress. It’s a unique opportunity to build confidence and develop real sailing skills under the guidance of highly experienced instructors.

After landfall, the second half of the trip is spent exploring the Faroes. These volcanic islands rise sheer from the ocean, carved by fjords and home to puffins, sea cliffs, and turf-roofed villages. We’ll sail between the islands and head ashore to explore each day. Hike to the Kallur Lighthouse on Kalsoy, perched high above vertical cliffs. Visit the dramatic site of the James Bond ‘No Time to Die’ grave. On Mykines, walk among puffins, fulmars, and gannets – it’s one of the North Atlantic’s greatest seabird colonies. If weather allows, we may also explore the islands’ famous sea caves by local boat.

Whether you’re new to sailing or building miles, you’ll be fully involved and welcomed as part of the crew. Solo travellers are very welcome, and everything is taught as we go.

Discretionary tipping of the Rubicon 3 crew

We’ve priced this trip 5-10% lower than we otherwise would to allow you the option, at the end of your adventure, to offer a discretionary tip to the Rubicon 3 skipper and mate if you feel they’ve provided exceptional service. A combined tip of 5-10% is suggested but is entirely at your discretion and based on your satisfaction with their performance. See our FAQs here.

Got Questions? We’re Here to Help!

We get it – joining a major sailing adventure is a big decision, and it’s natural to have lots of questions before you book. Wondering who else will be onboard? What the experience will be like? These and many more questions are completely normal. While our homepage and FAQs provide loads of info, we know sometimes it’s best to talk it through. Don’t hesitate to contact us by phone, email, or live chat (at the bottom of the screen). Better yet, we’d suggest you schedule a call. Most crew who join do and find it really useful. We can discuss your options, answer every question, and make sure you’re booking on the perfect trip for you.

No two voyages on this route are ever the same. Out here, the sea decides. With no fixed itinerary, we sail where the wind allows, guided by nature and the spirit of true adventure. What follows is just a taste of the unforgettable places we may explore.

Sailing North Through Scotland’s Islands

We begin in Scotland, weaving through a world of wild anchorages, rocky headlands, and storied waters. From the sea lochs and hidden harbours of the Hebrides to the dramatic Small Isles, this coastline teems with wildlife and history. If conditions allow, we may anchor beneath the jagged Cuillin Mountains, where waterfalls tumble into the sea, or sail past Ardnamurchan—the last point of land before the ocean.

The Crossing: 200 Miles of Open Sea

Then the land fades behind us. Ahead lie 200 miles of open North Atlantic. The boat settles into rhythm: three hours on, six hours off. You take your turn on the helm, adjust sails under starlight, and feel the vastness of the ocean all around. This is offshore sailing in its purest form.

Sandoy & Skúvoy

The southern islands of the Faroes feel like the end of the world. On Sandoy, sweeping black-sand beaches stretch beneath windswept cliffs, and turf-roofed cottages sit huddled against the elements.

Just to the west, Skúvoy rises steeply from the water. It’s named for the seabirds that nest in their thousands on its sheer cliffs. It’s a paradise for bird lovers, but also a place of immense solitude. If weather brings us here, we’ll hike its dramatic trails, where the Atlantic stretches unbroken in every direction and you feel, unmistakably, that you are sailing on the edge of the world.

Kalsoy: The Island of Legends and Dramatic Cliffs

Rising steeply from the sea, Kalsoy is one of the most striking islands in the Faroes, a place of sheer cliffs, deep fjords, and winding mountain paths. A short but breathtaking hike leads to the Kallur Lighthouse, perched at the very edge of the world, where the views stretch endlessly across the North Atlantic.

For film fans, James Bond’s final resting place from No Time to Die lies atop a windswept headland here, a cinematic tribute to this island’s stark, untamed beauty.

Mykines: A Seabird Paradise on the Edge of the Atlantic

The westernmost of the Faroes, Mykines is a wild and windswept island, home to thousands of puffins, gannets, and fulmars. Their cries fill the sky as they circle the cliffs and nest in the grass-tufted slopes.

A narrow footbridge leads out to the Mykines Lighthouse, perched high above the waves. From here, it’s all sea and sky and an endless horizon where birdlife swirls around you in every direction. It’s one of the most remote and spectacular places you’ll ever experience

A group of people wearing bright yellow waterproof jackets and life vests sit in a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) as they explore a dramatic sea grotto in the Faroe Islands. Towering dark rock formations rise on either side, with a natural archway framing the bright open ocean beyond. The water is a deep blue, reflecting light from the cave entrance. The passengers gaze in awe at the rugged beauty surrounding them.

Hestur & The Sea Caves

If time and conditions allow, we may be able to explore Klæmintsgjógv, the largest sea grotto in the world, where the water glows deep blue beneath towering basalt walls. The acoustics here are so unique that concerts have been performed inside the cave.

Torshavn

Tórshavn

Our journey ends in Tórshavn, the lively Faroese capital, where fishing boats, turf-roofed houses, and cozy cafés line the waterfront. Named after the Norse god of thunder, this tiny capital has a rich Viking history and a thriving food scene. It’s the perfect place to reflect on the adventure over a well-earned meal and drink.
